Separating Fact from Fiction: Choice and Control in the NDIS

Image
When it comes to the NDIS, there’s a lot of talk, plenty of advice, and more than a few myths—especially in diverse communities. At Family & Child Consultants, we hear questions every day from families and people who want to better understand what the NDIS really means for them. So let’s set the record straight. Myth #1: “Once you’re on the NDIS, you lose all control.” Fact: The heart of the NDIS is choice and control. You don’t have to take what you’re given. You choose your own providers, your supports, and how your plan is managed. Want services in your home language? Prefer someone who understands your culture or faith? You can ask for that. The NDIS is about making your life better, your way. Myth #2: “NDIS only works for some people—not for people from my background.” Fact: The NDIS was built for everyone —no matter your language, culture, or family type. Planners and Local Area Coordinators can connect you with interpreters or support workers who ‘get’ your world. Your sto...

Small Wins, Big Impact: Everyday Inclusion for People with Disabilities

Image
When we imagine “inclusion,” we often picture grand gestures or sweeping reforms. But real, lasting change for people with disabilities is built on everyday moments—small wins that add up to big shifts in community attitudes, opportunity, and trust. Think about a workplace that swaps a tiny step at the entrance for a ramp. Suddenly, a job applicant who uses a wheelchair gets to walk in the front door—no special request, no fuss. Or a café prints menus in larger type, making brunch stress-free instead of a guessing game for customers with vision loss. It doesn’t start or end with architecture. When teachers listen to a student who learns in a different way, or when colleagues invite an autistic team member for coffee instead of assuming they’re “not interested,” new friendships and career paths open up overnight. These moments are quiet, but for many, life-changing. Here are a few “small win” stories we’ve seen lately: A local footy club added sensory-friendly seating at games after lis...

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is changing lives across Australia—but did you know you can help shape how it works in your own community? Local NDIS Community Reference Groups are bringing together people with disability, their families, carers, and service providers to share ideas and make things better for everyone. What is a Community Reference Group? A Community Reference Group is a team of community members who meet regularly to talk about experiences, advice, and local needs. The group listens to what matters most, raises important issues, and helps make sure NDIS services are working for all kinds of people. Why join? Have your say:   Share what works well and what could be better in your area. Build new connections:   Meet others who understand your journey, and learn from each other. Make a difference:   Your ideas could lead to real changes that support more people. Learn and grow:   Hear about new opportunities, services, and ways ...
